Why Work for SOAR?
Imagine spending your summer immersed in the breathtaking beauty of nature—waking up to the sunrise over the mountains, paddling across serene lakes, and hiking through lush forests. Now, imagine doing all of that while making a profound impact on the lives of children. At SOAR, we don’t just lead outdoor adventures; we create life-changing experiences for youth who face learning challenges. We empower them to overcome obstacles, develop resilience, and build confidence.
Working at SOAR is more than a job—it’s a mission. Whether you’re belaying a camper on their first rock climb in the Pisgah National Forest, guiding them through whitewater rapids, or encouraging them around a campfire after a long day’s journey, you are shaping lives. The work is challenging but is among the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. You’ll walk away with new skills, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable stories that you’ll carry with you forever.

Available Positions at SOAR
SOAR offers a variety of positions for those who are eager to make a difference while embracing the great outdoors. Here’s a deeper look at some of our key roles:
- Field Staff: The heart and soul of SOAR, Field Staff members are the mentors, guides, and support system for our campers. They provide direct care, facilitate outdoor experiences, and help campers navigate challenges while fostering a supportive and adventurous environment. Room and board, an extensive training program, and access to industry discounts are included. This role requires resilience, adaptability, and an unshakable commitment to making a difference.
- Activity Specialists: These individuals bring specialized skills in activities such as rock climbing, paddling (canoeing in Wyoming, whitewater rafting in North Carolina), and horseback riding (Wyoming only). Their expertise ensures that every adventure is safe, exciting, and impactful for campers.
- Course Directors: Typically returning staff who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, Course Directors oversee program logistics, mentor Field Staff, and ensure the success of each camp session. They play a crucial role in shaping the camper experience and guiding staff development.
What It Takes to Work at SOAR
Success at SOAR isn’t about how many miles you can hike or how well you can start a fire—it’s about your heart, your mindset, and your dedication to changing lives. Here’s what we look for in our team members:
- Patience and adaptability: The outdoors—and working with kids—can be unpredictable. You need to embrace uncertainty and stay positive, even in the face of challenges.
- A passion for helping others: Our mission is to empower children who learn differently. If you have a genuine desire to uplift, mentor, and inspire young people, you’ll thrive here.
- A love for adventure: You’ll be spending 98% of your time outside, from the rugged backcountry of Wyoming to the rivers and forests of North Carolina. If you crave adventure, this is the perfect place for you.
- Resilience and a strong work ethic: The work is demanding, but the rewards are immeasurable. If you’re willing to push yourself, you’ll experience personal and professional growth like never before.

Opportunities Beyond the Summer
Unlike many seasonal programs, SOAR offers year-round opportunities for staff who want to continue making an impact. We operate a boarding school in Waynesville, NC, and a Gap Year in Cataloochee, NC, both of which provide long-term career opportunities for those who excel during the summer. Many of our full-time staff started as summer employees, fell in love with the mission, and transitioned into permanent roles. If you’re looking for a career that blends adventure, education, and mentorship, SOAR provides a path forward.
Internships at SOAR
SOAR also offers paid academic and non-academic internships. Whether you’re studying Outdoor Recreation, Psychology, Education, or another related field, we’ll work with your academic institution to tailor an internship that meets your requirements while giving you hands-on experience in an immersive environment. During summer programs, all interns receive room and board and invaluable mentorship and skill-building opportunities.
No Outdoor Experience? No Problem!
Some of our best staff started with little to no outdoor experience—what set them apart was their willingness to learn and their passion for helping kids. We provide an extensive training program to ensure that every staff member is prepared for the summer. You’ll learn everything from campsite management to leadership techniques, ensuring you have the tools you need to succeed. Additionally, we strategically pair staff members so that each team has a balance of skills and strengths.
Is there travel opportunities?
Yes! SOAR operates camps in both Western North Carolina and Northwest Wyoming. While most staff remain in one location, opportunities to switch locations occasionally arise (always compensated). Travel stipends are provided as part of the staffing contract, and while travel outside of camp programming is rare during work hours, you’re free to explore on your days off. Many staff use their free time to take road trips, explore national parks, and embark on their own outdoor adventures.
A Staff Favorite: The Canoe Course
For many SOAR staff members, the canoe course holds a special place in their hearts. Picture this: the first light of dawn reflects off the glassy water, the rhythmic dip of paddles breaks the silence, and the crisp morning air fills your lungs as you guide your group across a tranquil lake. Canoe travel isn’t just about transportation—it’s about connection. It’s about working together as a team, overcoming challenges, and finding peace in the stillness of nature.
Ultimate Adventure with Purpose
Spending a summer with SOAR isn’t just about having an adventure—it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s about standing beside a camper as they conquer their fears, watching them grow stronger with each challenge they overcome, and knowing that you played a role in their journey. It’s about pushing yourself, learning new skills, and making friendships that last a lifetime.
Yes, it’s tough, and yes, you’ll be challenged. But the most meaningful experiences in life are the ones that push us beyond our comfort zones. If you’re ready for an unforgettable adventure filled with purpose, passion, and the power to change lives, then SOAR is calling your name.
Join us this summer and be part of something extraordinary.
